First of all make a promise to yourself that you are going to quit from this day onwards. Determination is the key here and being successful in stopping smoking requires you to bite your lip and use some resolve. This “true grit” will help you fight the feelings that weaken you. Remember that once you have made you mind up to stop, it does becomes slightly easier.
Doing some exercise and getting your body into shape will improve your lung capacity and make you feel the benefits almost immediately. If you sit around idle and doing nothing there’s definitely more chance that you may light up a cigarette, so you’ll have to avoid relaxing for a while and do some fitness. Even a brisk walk can get the blood pumping.
Avoid places and pastimes that you associate with smoking, especially when going to bars and pubs as we all know that drinking weakens your resolve and the chances that you may light up after having a drink increases fourfold, so it’s best to steer clear of these places in the early days. Only when you have truly stopped smoking and can you really venture back into these places. Remember while you are in this transitional phase it’s better to think of other ways of spending your leisure time.
When quitting smoking sip some small amounts of water throughout the day. This can be helpful in lessening the pangs that you get from nicotine withdrawal. Also keep some fruit or nuts around you for when you have the need to put something in your mouth. Try to stay off the sweets and chocolate.
Get support from you friends and family by telling then that you have given up smoking. You friends should help you by steering you clear any situations where you might feel the need to smoke and also to give you some moral support.
